QuickChange Project Pilot Success

Working in collaboration, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Paediatric Podiatry team and the local public health team have successfully produced and piloted an animation which aims to increase daily physical activity, whilst also promoting exercises that strengthen foot and ankle muscles, in children aged between 4 and 6 years of age.

QuickChange is a short-animation aimed at young children, whilst encouraging them to follow along with specific exercises and enjoy taking part in daily physical activity within the classroom environment. The final product was an animation with ten characters who take the children through ten different exercises that incorporate strength, balance and mindfulness.

Working with both Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Healthy Schools teams, five primary schools were successfully recruited to pilot the animation. Both Reception and Year 1 class teachers were briefed and fully involved with the scoping, implementation and evaluation of the QuickChange throughout the piloting phase.

The pilot has been a huge success with over 280 children aged 4-6years old taking part, spread across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, and including Welsh language schools. Teacher input and feedback has been invaluable and provided qualitative evaluation that can be drawn upon to spread and scale the project further.

Comments from teaching staff included:

“Lovely clear instructions, children enjoyed, length of activities was also excellent. If it has great benefit to the children then definitely something that I’d be happy to implement.” – Reception Teacher

“The children really enjoyed the animation and were asking when we were going to do it next! The animation really helped the children and it was short enough to keep their attention. We will definitely be carrying on with practising the movements.” – Year 1 Teacher
