Project Description

Move More Eat Well partner action is continuing to have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of children within educational settings, which is evident through the work of West End Playgroup in Barry.

West End Playgroup has worked with Vale of Glamorgan Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme (HaSPSS) to implement healthy food choices and prioritise physical activity for all children, by developing an encompassing environment that centres around moving more and eating well.

West End Playgroup offers a warm and welcoming space for children, where parents know they will be stimulated indoors and outdoors, and will be well cared for by dedicated staff.

Recognising the benefits that physical activity and fresh air can have on the health and wellbeing of children in pre-school settings, West End Playgroup identified an opportunity to enhance their external space and develop an outdoor play area that was age suitable and enabled the children to be more active. Working with HaSPSS, the Playgroup aimed to maximise their facilities to provide an educational environment that improved the children’s health and wellbeing.

The all-weather outdoor play area at West End Playgroup has given the children an incredible opportunity to access exercise, take part in various sports and games, enjoy the trampolines and bikes and encourage participation in different activities. Additionally, with the support of HaSPSS, the Playgroup has created a beautiful, scenic space that includes a wild flower area for children, staff and parents to enjoy and a bench that has been installed to encourage socialisation and community use.

Furthermore, the playgroup has been very proactive in introducing fruit and vegetables to the children’s diet. One of the main ways they have done this is with their vegetable patch, enabling the children to grow fruit and vegetables and then eat what they have made within their snack time, expanding the children’s knowledge of more nutritious foods massively.

Beyond the environment, the HaSPSS also provided advice, support and training for staff to ensure the playgroup is a setting that enables the children to be as healthy as possible.

“The support we received from the Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme was invaluable. They helped us to truly transform our external space for our children and also to drive positive change when considering healthy eating and physical activity. They provided us with tricks, tips and advice on how we could involve the children at every stage and build our staff confidence to complete these tasks,” commented Ceri Limbrick, Playgroup leader at West End Playgroup.

West End Playgroup’s outdoor play area has been a great resource for the children, staff and parents and recently earned them an award for ‘The Best Outdoor Area’ in the prestigious Early Years Wales Awards. For more information about The West End Playgroups award win click here
