Changing patterns in the way we travel and having greater reliance on the car for regular transport contributes to declining levels of physical activity, increasing levels of obesity and diabetes, widespread air pollution, social isolation, and worsening health inequalities. Recently smarter working practices have highlighted the potential to increase healthier and more environmentally friendly ways to travel to support more sustainable forms of transport.

Our plan includes:

  1. Developing and implementing Healthy Travel Charters across public, private and third sectors.
  2. Further developing and maintaining cycling and walking infrastructure and cycling parking
  3. Developing an integrated public transport system

What can you do to implement Healthy Travel Charter?

Organisations across Wales are showing their commitment to healthier and more sustainable forms of transport, by publicly signing a Healthy Travel Charter. Each Charter contains a series of commitments the organisation will make over 3 years to support their staff and visitors to walk and cycle more, take public transport, and switch to electric vehicles.

There is a public sector charter for both Cardiff and the Vale, including a business charter. Currently in development are a third sector charter and higher/further education charter. Visit the website for further information.

Declining levels of physical activity, increasing levels of obesity and diabetes, widespread air pollution, social isolation, and worsening health inequalities are all pressing public health issues. Climate change is a severe threat which is already being felt in the UK and across the world.
